After the ANZAC Day March, the Pipeclay Club invite members and guests to come together to mark this solemn day of remembrance. Our guest speaker is Dr Ross Bastiaan AM RFD*.
About our Speaker:
Dr Ross Bastiaan AM RFD* is a periodontist, and has been in private practice in Melbourne since 1978. He has dental Masters degrees from Melbourne and London University, a Fellowships of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of three other international dental colleges and has contributed to three dental textbooks and published over 25 scientific articles.
In 2003 he was the President of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and has held senior positions in many other dental organisations. He is currently the Chairman of the College Foundation and taught for years at the Dental School, University of Melbourne and was a Director of the Australian Dental Council.
Dr Bastiaan was the Forensic Dentist to the Melbourne Coroner and Homicide Squad, Victorian Police Force, for 10 years from 1981. He was a serving Colonel in the Army Reserve, Royal Australian Army Dental Corps. He enlisted in 1975 and was the honorary dentist to the Governor General of Australia.
Between 1995 & 2009 Ross Bastiaan was the Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra and served on that Council. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne for 18 years and a Director of Odyssey House Drug Rehabilitation Centre for 10 years. He is recently retired from 9 years on the Board of the Victorian Veterans Council in the State Government.
Australian Military History has been his long-term interest and since 1990 he has personally placed around the world over 285 multi-lingual, large bronze commemorative interpretative plaques, mainly telling of Australia’s past military & social history. They are in 20 different countries with many at Gallipoli, Papua-New Guinea, France and Belgium. Some are exhibited at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra; House of Commons, London & The Imperial War Museum, England. The plaques, many one metre square, are hand- sculpted & written by him and include bas-relief pictures, maps and text. In 1995 he designed the Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Memorial in St Kilda Road, Melbourne and in 2000 was the personal guide to Prime Minister & Mrs Howard on their pilgrimage to Gallipoli and France and Victorian Premiere Mr. Bracks in Singapore in 2006.
He has written three books on the First and Second World Wars, including a ‘Guide to the Gallipoli Battlefields’, ‘A Motorists Guide to the Great Ocean Road’ and the ‘Kokoda Walk in the Dandenong Rangers’, the later won first prize in the Information Victoria ‘Guide and Walks’ 2002 awards.
In 2006 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for “Services to Australian Military History and Dentistry” following on from his 1991 Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and the RSL Anzac of the Year. In 1992 he was awarded the Advance Australia Award for Australian History, in 1998 Life Membership of the RSL and the Commonwealth Centenary Medal in 2003.
Ross Bastiaan has two adult sons, seven granddaughters and lives in Port Melbourne and on a small farm at Merricks North, just south of Melbourne. His hobby is wood splitting.
Dress: Uniform or Men - Lounge suit / Jacket and Tie, and Ladies - Day Dress and medals.
Cost: $65.00 per person, includes 2 course luncheon.
Beverages: Beverages are available at the cash bar.
Bookings: Bookings are necessary and guests are very welcome. You do not have to be an RACV Club Member to book. Luncheon bookings close noon Thursday 21st April 2022
